It's too early for planting, but not for planning. As the seed and plant catalogs arrive, make a list of new varieties and old favorites. It's never too early to place orders. Last frost date is May 15 and, if starting from seed, count back from this date to determine the proper number of weeks before hardening off and planting out. Seeds requiring 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting can be started in March. Quick germinators, like tomatoes, can begin in early April, but seeds that are difficult to germinate should be started this month. Self-watering mini greenhouse propagators are a great investment and yield excellent results with a minimum of effort.
All propagators and tools should be clean and disinfected before use and always select a soil medium made for seed starting to ensure health and vigor. The soil-born disease known as "damping off" is the biggest foe of seedlings and can easily be avoided by starting clean. Wiping down countertops with alcohol or covering with newspaper never hurts either. For seed suggestions, check out the Picks and Pans page.
